BARNARDO'S recently invited local MPs througout the
country to spend an hour working in their charity
shops.
The aim was to help politicians to learn more about the work
Barnardo's carries out, and how it raises its money through
donations.
Tom accepted an invitation to spend some time at the charity's
shop in Kilmarnock Road, Shawlands.
"I had a great time," said Tom afterwards. "I was genuinely
surprised at how busy the shop was, and at he generosity of people
who came in to donate goods."
The Glasgow South MP's "boss" for the day was shop manager,
Aileen Beattie, who explained how Gift Aid - introduced by the
government to maximise the cash value of people's donations - can
now be used to maximise the value of donations in kind, not just
cash.
"This is an annual event which Barnardo's organises, and it's
clearly very worthwhile. Many of my colleagues in parliament have
taken part and recognise its value.
"I also managed to buy a couple of bargains in the shop while I
was there," Tom added.
